Northumberland Parent Carer Forum - Peer Supporter
What the role will involve
As a Parent Carer Peer Supporter, you’ll use your lived experience of supporting a young person with SEND and/or disabilities to help other parent carers feel understood, informed and less alone. You’ll be part of a small, supportive team offering gentle, low‑demand support in ways that feel manageable for you.
Your role may include:
-
Offering simple, compassionate check‑ins with parent carers who have asked for support (this might be by message, email, phone or in‑person — whatever works for you)
-
Helping parent carers make sense of information and navigate services without overwhelming them
-
Supporting wellbeing sessions and information events, helping to welcome people, share knowledge and create a calm, friendly atmosphere
-
Sharing your lived experience in a boundaried, supportive way that helps others feel validated and understood
-
Signposting to services and resources in a clear, low‑demand way
-
Keeping things safe and confidential, working within agreed boundaries
-
Taking part in training, mentoring and reflective practice to build your confidence and skills
-
Being part of a small, caring peer support community where we look after each other too
You won’t be expected to fix problems, take on emotional weight alone, or act as a professional. Your role is to walk alongside another parent carer, offering understanding, clarity and connection.
